Dog Track

Preliminary SARCON 2010 Dog Track

The objectives for the SAR K9 track for November 2010 SARCON are twofold:

1. Provide a range of current topics and information to K9 teams that support skill development and knowledge of Search, Rescue and Recovery.

Provide instruction and hands-on opportunities to existing K9 teams across training levels, and provide learning opportunities to those interested in becoming a handler and/or developing a team.

This will be accomplished by providing high quality, recognized, professional instructors for classroom instruction and hands-on training which appeals to a wide SAR K9 audience by discipline: area search, building search, trailing, and cadaver. Additionally the learning track will offer lessons on topics that support all SAR dog disciplines: dog selection, building drive, veterinary, safety issues in deployments, use and integration, team development, expectations of a SAR dog team.

Note that there may be required equipment for participation in the hands-on courses, which will be identified when registration opens.

Courses (Lectures):

Developing a K9 for SAR. Cindee Valentin, Master Trainer, Contra Costa Sheriff Office.

How to integrate the SAR K9 into your search. Lt. Russell Pedersen, Washoe County Sheriff Office.

The Science of Scent. John C. Sagebiel, Ph.D., University of Nevada Reno.

Staying alive and keeping your SAR K9 healthy in the search environment.                                                               Dr. Ben Ho, WOOF/FEMA.

Courses (Hands-on beginning Friday afternoon):

Trailing – Problem solving for SAR dog teams. Jonni Joyce.

The course is geared for trailing dog handlers (or those starting area dogs in trailing first) and will focus on hands-on problem solving with the dogs in the field. This course is appropriate for teams across levels of trailing experience.

This course will have limited registration for handlers with dogs, to allow for one-on-one training for handlers with the Master Trainer. There will be no limit in number of individuals who wish to participate in the class without a dog.

Area and building search for the live-find dog. Lou Castle.

This course is geared for the area dog handler (air-scent) and will involve the outdoor environment that also contains structures integrated into scenarios for problem solving.

This course is for teams across levels of experience or for teams who are new to searching intact structures on the live-find area search deployment. Registration for handlers with dogs may be limited to allow for one-on-one training with the Master Trainer. There will be no limit in number of individuals who wish to participate in the class without a dog. (www.loucastle.com)

Building and shaping drive in the working dog. Jack Fields.

This course is geared for teams from any working dog discipline and will provide both foundation training and hands-on instruction where handlers are seeking to resolve training problems involving drive and the reward, or develop and build drive in the working K9.

This is an appropriate course for any dog team of any level from puppies just starting out to veteran dogs. (www.k9development.com)

Problem solving for cadaver dog handlers. Mary Cablk and Chris Salisbury.

This is an entirely hands-on training opportunity for cadaver dog handlers. Problems will be set for handlers to work based on scenarios/cases, and information will be provided to handlers depending on their skill and training level. Instructors will also work with teams on specific training issues if desired. Problems/scenarios will include aged sets of a week or more.

This course is appropriate for teams who are beyond the initial imprinting stage with their dog and are actively training towards certification in cadaver, or whom are seeking training opportunities with a certified dog. (www.searchdogs.com)
